A U.S. citizen has been arrested on smuggling and weapons charges at the Abbotsford border, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

On Feb. 4, 2014, the CBSA Criminal Investigations Section swore the following charges against U.S. resident Steven Williams: one count of smuggling under section 159 of the Customs Act, and one count of possessing restricted firearms without being the holder of a licence under section 91(1) of the Criminal Code.

The charges stem from Jan. 22, 2014, when CBSA officers at the Abbotsford-Huntingdon port of entry were conducting an examination of two U.S. travellers en route to Alaska. Williams, the driver, declared a rifle at the primary inspection booth, and he was referred for a secondary examination to verify the declaration. While examining the 20-foot cargo trailer, officers located and seized five undeclared firearms: two revolvers, two rifles and a 12-gauge shotgun.

Williams was arrested and will appear in Surrey Provincial Court on Mar. 6, 2014.

In 2013, CBSA officers at the Abbotsford-Huntingdon port of entry seized 30 undeclared firearms (prohibited, restricted and non-restricted) and laid firearms-related charges against 72 people.
