Chicken owner will ask council to reconsider ban on backyard flocks
A local urban-chicken owner will ask council to reconsider the recently upheld ban on backyard flocks on Monday.
Council voted to continue its prohibition of urban chickens following a delegation to council on Oct. 7 by Leslie Stettler, another chicken owner in Abbotsford.
Stettler suggested the city run a pilot project to allow chickens in urban areas, but council voted against the proposal, citing concerns for neighbours and the potential impact on the agricultural sector.
Following the decision, Tanya Buskell said she was "blindsided." Buskell has previously been told she could keep her chickens until council discussed the issue and would be notified when it came forward.
The city said due to a changeover in staff, Buskell failed to be notified.
The city invited Buskell to present her case at the executive meeting of council on Monday, where she will ask council to reconsider their decision.
