Driver in fatal Abbotsford crash comes forward
A 23-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged in relation to the fatal crash that took place Aug. 6 on Townline Road just south of Olund Road.
Sgt. Elly Wright said the driver of the red Acura involved in the crash, which killed 19-year-old Gurgan Sidhu, showed up on Wednesday at the Abbotsford Police Department with his lawyer.
Maninderjit Brar was arrested and later released on bail with conditions to not consume alcohol and to keep the peace and be of good behavior.
He has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
Brar is next slated to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on Sept. 19.
Four men ranging in age from 19 to 25 were in the vehicle when it went off the road and into a ditch at about 2:15 a.m. on Aug. 6.
When police arrived, all the men were out of the vehicle, and Sidhu was found on the road. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.
Police said that immediately following the crash, three men had approached a resident in the area and asked her to drive Sidhu to hospital instead of calling first responders.
The neighbour then called emergency services.
In the days following the incident, police said the three surviving men were not disclosing who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Wright said the investigation is continuing into the incident.
