Public hearing set for Abbotsford police officer
A public hearing has been scheduled for an Abbotsford Police officer who previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a shoplifting suspect.
The hearing, being held by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner, will take place Feb. 18 to 21 at Robson Square provincial court in Vancouver.
The proceedings will determine whether Const. Adam Page, 38, abused his authority during the assault and then lied in official statements made following the incident.
Depending on the findings, disciplinary action could be recommended.
The hearing was previously postponed to await the conclusion of Page's court case on his criminal assault charge.
He was sentenced last April to one year probation and a conditional discharge, meaning he will have no criminal record if he has met all his court-ordered conditions by the end of his probation.
Information presented in court indicated that Page pushed a handcuffed shoplifting suspect into a wall hard enough to leave a dent during an arrest on Sept. 20, 2009 at the London Drugs store in West Oaks mall.
The man was not injured nor did he report the incident to the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). Instead, the matter was brought forward internally.
A review by the APD determined that Page had abused his authority, but that he had not been deceitful in his duty report or in oral statements made during an interview following the assault.
But police complaint commissioner Stan Lowe stated that the APD erred when it concluded there was no deceit.
Lowe alleges that Page knowingly made false statements. In his written report, Page said the suspect had attempted to pull away from him and he then stepped on his ankle and calf, causing the man to fall into the wall, Lowe alleges.
It is also alleged that Page made oral statements of that nature during an interview with a staff sergeant.
Page, who has been with the APD since 2004, was moved to front-desk duties after the assault came to light in April 2010. He is now subject to disciplinary action which could include a reprimand, retraining, demotion in rank or even dismissal.
