A long-time member of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) was presented with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal on Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Len Goerke received the honour during the monthly meeting of the Abbotsford Police board.

The Jubilee Medal was created to mark Queen Elizabeth II's 60th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

It honours those who have made significant achievement and provided remarkable service to Canada.

Goerke is in charge of the APD's administration division, which includes human resources, finance and budget, planning and policy, and professional standards.

He has been with the APD since 1987, when it operated as the Matsqui Police force.

Goerke worked as a constable in areas such as patrol and the emergency response team before being promoted to sergeant in 2000 and staff sergeant in 2003.

In the latter role, he was in charge of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team (MIERT), which recently disbanded.

Goerke was promoted to inspector in 2007 and was the officer in charge of human resources. In 2009, he took over as head of the criminal investigations branch.

Goerke also serves on the boards of the Central Abbotsford Community School Society and the UFV Alumni Association.
