Candelight vigil held for India rape victim
The GirlKind Foundation held a candlelight vigil in Abbotsford on Sunday night (Dec. 30) in response to the gang rape and death of a young woman in Delhi, India.
The 23-year-old medical student was raped on Dec. 16 by several men on a bus, beaten with iron bars and then thrown out of the moving vehicle. She died from her injuries in Singapore on Sunday.
The vigil in Abbotsford was held outside of city hall.
"We came together as one to pledge to fight for the safety and security of every girl and woman in honour of all the lives lost due to violence against women and girls," said Deesh Sekhon, director of GirlKind Foundation.
Sekhon recently formed the foundation in response to girls in India who are abandoned or killed because of their gender.
Her goal is to combat gender discrimination and raise awareness about the issue.
