Two purse snatchings at gas stations

Abbotsford Police are warning motorists to be cautious of their valuables, following two purse snatchings at gas stations on New Year's Eve.

The first one took place at about 3 p.m. in the 2000 block of Sumas Way.

A woman who had finished fueling up her vehicle noticed that her purse was missing from the passenger seat.

Const. Ian MacDonald said surveillance video from the gas station shows a woman approaching the passenger side of the car, opening up the unlocked door and taking the purse.

The suspect then drove away in a sedan. MacDonald said police are trying to enhance the grainy video in order to get a better image of the suspect.

The second incident occurred less than an hour later at a gas station at the intersection of Bourquin Crescent and South Fraser Way.

A woman was getting gas while her young child was in the backseat. When the driver got back in the car, her purse was missing from the passenger seat. Her child reported seeing a hand reach through the partially open window and take the purse.

MacDonald said surveillance video is not available from that incident, but given the similar circumstances and the time frame, it is believed the same suspect was involved.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225.
