South Poplar Schoolhouse donated to MSA Museum Society
The Abbotsford board of education has agreed to donate the old South Poplar Schoolhouse to the MSA Museum Society.
The society hopes to relocate the old building to the Trethewey House heritage site on Ware Street at Mill Lake to form one of the cornerstones of its proposed Discovery Village.
The school is currently situated adjacent to South Poplar Traditional School at the corner of Huntingdon and Gladwin roads.
The Discovery Village proposal features a 7,000-square-foot “discovery centre” and a 3,000-square-foot covered stage encompassing much of the area around Mill Lake.
The museum society wants to feature interpretive heritage tours, including First Nations, industry, agriculture, ecology, transportation and walking tours.
South Poplar School would be restored and used at the site as a heritage schoolhouse.
School district spokesman Dave Stephen said there are still a number of steps required – through the Ministry of Education – before the building can be moved.
Once all details are finalized, a bylaw will be brought before the board of education for final approval.
