Fire crews rescue dog that had fallen over cliff
Abbotsford firefighters came to the rescue of a dog named "Mary," who had fallen down a steep embankment on Sunday afternoon.
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) responded at about 4:20 p.m. to a report that Mary had fallen over a cliff on the north side of Sumas Mountain.
The 13-year-old rottweiler/German shepherd cross had been missing for about 24 hours. Her owner, who had been out searching for her, found her at the bottom of the slope and was by her side when crews arrived.
Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett said the rescue was difficult due to the steep, slippery slope and the fact that darkness had set in.
AFRS technical rescue crews were lowered to the location using a rope system. The dog and the owner were then hauled up the embankment.
Rivett said the rescue took about one hour, and Mary appeared to be in good condition, despite the ordeal.
The last time AFRS rescued an injured dog was in September of this year, when a large dog fell into a ravine on Sumas Mountain Road.
