Arson and assault charges laid
An Abbotsford man has now been charged following a fire that occurred after an apparent fight with his brother.
James Ashby, 34, was charged with arson and aggravated assault.
The incident took place on Nov. 7, when Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called to the 27000 block of Myrtle Avenue. When they arrived, they found that a motor home on the back of the property was engulfed in flames.
A 31-year-old man on the scene was suffering serious burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police allege that Ashby brought accelerant to the residence and poured it inside the motor home. It was then ignited by a heater, according to police, and the flames spread to the victim.
Ashby was arrested in Mission about two hours later.
Ashby’s criminal record includes two convictions for mischief – one in 1999 and the other in 2001 – and one for impaired driving.
