Abbotsford home suffers major fire damage

An Abbotsford home suffered major damage due to a basement fire on Friday morning.

The blaze was reported to Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service at about 10:30 a.m. after a helicopter pilot flying over the area noticed smoke coming from the house at 857 Bradner Rd.

When crews arrived, light smoke was coming from the top floor of the home, and the lone occupant was standing in the yard.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said that due to the large amount of items in the basement, the fire grew and caused major smoke damage to the entire house.

Thirteen trucks and 35 firefighters were on the scene to battle the blaze.

Helmer said damage is estimated at $250,000. The cause is still under investigation.
