Abbotsford man killed in shooting in Honduras
An Abbotsford man has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting Wednesday in Honduras.
News agencies in Honduras are reporting that Themy (Tim) Alexandre Vallee-Apostolakis, 34, was leaving a bar called "La Cueva" on the island of Roatan off the Honduran coast. He was walking down a dark stretch of gravel road with three local people to catch a taxi from the main road, according to the reports.
Two men reportedly approached Vallee and demanded his iPhone and cash, and, when he resisted, he was shot in the head. Vallee was taken to Roatan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Vallee, a conservation officer with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, had been in Honduras for several days and was nearing the end of his vacation, according to the Bay Islands Voice, a monthly news publication in Roatan.
The bar is described as being in a rough neighbourhood that does not cater to tourists.
"If you were looking for the closest thing to a crack-abusing ghetto in Roatan, you would look here," stated an on online report.
One suspect, Eon Ezekiel Carter Stewart, 29, was arrested Thursday in connection with the shooting. But, as of Friday, the man suspected of firing the fatal shot was still at large. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Roger Natividad Ruiz Avila, 22.
Vallee had posted on his Facebook page on Oct. 8 that he was leaving for a 10-day trip to Roatan Island.
On Tuesday, his last post read "I'm in Honduras watching my country get nail solid by Honduras … I guess we should stick to hockey."
Vallee himself played on a men's recreational hockey team in Abbotsford.
