Burning ban extended in Abbotsford
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has extended the community's burning ban at least until Oct. 15, due to the record-breaking dry spell and the increase in the forest fire rating to "extreme."
Acting Fire Chief Dale Unrau said the ban could be extended if dry conditions continue.
The City of Abbotsford's fire service bylaw imposes an annual ban on all outdoor burning between June 1 and Sept. 30.
Currently, there is a $500 fine for discarding burning substances, including cigarettes, and a $500 fine for burning during the fire ban.
Unrau said that people who cause accidental fires can also be charged with the cost of battling the blaze or face criminal charges.
"With the extreme dry conditions, citizens are advised to adhere to the burning ban and be extra-vigilant to prevent grass or forest fires," Unrau said.
