Sentenced for Abbotsford bank robbery

A man who was arrested not far from an Abbotsford bank he had just robbed has been sentenced to more than two years in prison.

Matthew Allan Keefe, 29, of Chilliwack was handed 25 months in jail after pleading guilty on July 27 to one count of robbery.

Keefe walked into a bank in the 32800 block of South Fraser Way on July 10, approached a teller and handed over a note implying that he was carrying a weapon in his backpack.

The teller handed over a small amount of cash, and Keefe fled on foot.

Witnesses provided his description to officers who arrived on the scene.

An officer who left the bank then came across Keefe walking along Bourquin Crescent, not far from the robbery scene.

Evidence, including video surveillance, confirmed Keefe as the culprit.

Keefe is also currently before the courts in Chilliwack for charges of theft, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop at an accident, fraud, and breach of his probation.

His next appearance on those matters is Aug. 10.
