Banman, Fast open anniversary celebration

The Abbotsford News' 90th anniversary festivities and open house is in full swing this afternoon.

The event is at the News office (34375 Gladys Ave.), and runs until 3:30 p.m.

Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman was on hand to open the event and congratulated the paper for its long service.

"More than just a newspaper, The News can be regarded as a part of the fabric of our community," he said.

Banman said the paper not only covers the community, but helps to promote local businesses at a time when "We need to be shopping locally, investing in the community and protecting local jobs."

The mayor also called the paper a community watchdog that holds elected leaders accountable.

"It shines an important light on local government and keeps voters informed."

Abbotsford MP Ed Fast was also an hand to offer his congratulations on the anniversary.

Fast told the crowd that politicians and papers have a difficult relationship.

"Those of us who participate in public office obviously have a love-hate relationship with the media," said Fast.

He said the Abbotsford News has met the challenge over the years to get information right and to report fairly, accurately and without bias.

A number of community groups have booths set up, including Agrifair, where people can register to be part of the summer festival's second annual Amazing Race.

Additionally, the News is launching several major contests today, including giveaways of a Harley Davidson motorcycle and a tent trailer valued at $10,000 from Fraserway RV.
