It was a co-ordinated response involving local RCMP and specialized policing that resulted in a dangerous offender being arrested in Chilliwack.
A man who was wanted on a number of warrants and was prohibited from driving Canada-wide, was seen behind the wheel of a vehicle on March 4 by Chilliwack RCMP.
Local frontline officers called in the Lower Mainland District Integrated Police Dog Service (LMD IPDS), to ensure the safety of the man and the members, Sgt. Vanessa Munn stated in a press release.
Chilliwack RCMP deployed a spike belt to stop the vehicle and the driver allegedly continued driving, despite the state of his vehicle. Once it came to a stop, and with the help from the police dogs, the man was arrested.
"The response from our members and IPDS to a dangerous offender in our community is a testament to the importance of collaboration between frontline and specialized policing services," said Inspector Jeff Bowerman, acting officer-in-charge of Upper Fraser Regional Detachment RCMP. "We take public safety very seriously here in Chilliwack and always appreciate the support from LMD IPDS."
It was one of many incidents throughout the Lower Mainland in one week where the Lower Mainland District Integrated Teams collaborated with local police.
On Feb. 28, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services, with support from the Forensic Search and Evidence Recovery Team, attended the scene of a house explosion and fire in Langley.
On March 3, the newly established Integrated Gang Homicide Team was called to a fatal shooting in Surrey, where a man with alleged connections to organized crime died after being targeted with gunfire while in his vehicle.
And on March 4, the Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT) was deployed to three separate incidents in Langley where they resolved simultaneous critical incidents with the IPDS.
The integrated teams provide specialized policing services to all 27 Lower Mainland municipalities policed by the RCMP as well as the six municipal partners in Abbotsford, West Vancouver, Port Moody, New Westminster, Delta and Surrey. Each unit is made up of highly-specialized, experienced RCMP and municipal police officers with extensive training.
