Fraser Valley Symphony presents New and Timeless concert on April 6

The Fraser Valley Symphony's spring concert is set for Sunday, April 6.

Soprano saxophonist Julia Nolan and guest conductor Bujar Llapaj are the featured performers for the Fraser Valley Symphony's spring concert entitled New and Timeless, which is set for Sunday, April 6.

Nolan will play the Concerto for Soprano Saxophone by contemporary Vancouver composer Stefan Hintersteininger. Nolan has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (Bramwell Tovey conducting) and with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and she currently teaches saxophone at the University of British Columbia, and the Vancouver Symphony School of Music. She has also judged and performed in Asia, Europe and North America.

Llapaj is a prominent figure in the Balkan classical music scent and studied at the Academy of Arts in Tirana, Albania. He immigrated to Canada in 2002 and has conducted concerts throughout Europe, and frequently travels abroad as a guest conductor.Llapaj was the founding conductor and artistic director for the New Philharmonic Orchestra and is the principal conductor with the West Coast Symphony Orchestra.

Additionally, the orchestra will play Verdi’s La Forza del Destino overture and Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D Minor.

The concert occurs at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (32315 South Fraser Way). Doors open at 2:30 p.m. and showtime is at 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, $18 for seniors or students and $6 for children. They are available at King's Music (2669 Langdon St.) in Abbotsford, at fraservalleysymphony.org/tickets or at the door.

Founded in 1984, and in its 41st season, the FVS is comprised of musicians from Abbotsford and surrounding communities.
