We Will Rock You, featuring music of Queen, comes to Abbotsford

Show plays Abbotsford Centre on Saturday, Jan. 4 with ‘cautionary tale’ of cyber age

The timeless music of Freddie Mercury and Queen comes to the stage of Abbotsford Centre on Saturday, Jan. 4 with the rock-musical theatrical experience We Will Rock You.

The show was first produced in 2002 but is back on the road for its latest North American tour. It’s based on the songs of Queen along with an original story written by Ben Elton (The Young Ones, Blackadder, Popcorn).

While We Will Rock You is a quirky, eccentric and heartfelt story of outsiders, it’s also a creative cautionary tale for the cyber age.

It reflects the scale and spectacle that marked Queen’s live performances and earned the band its pinnacle position in rock history.

The 2019-20 North American tour of the musical features a talented ensemble cast of young professionals – singers, actors and dancers – with a backing band that replicates Queen’s music.

The original West End production featured music supervision from Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Elton fashioned this futuristic story around more than 24 of Queen’s biggest hit songs including: We Are the Champions, Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, Somebody To Love, Killer Queen, Don’t Stop Me Now, Under Pressure, Bohemian Rhapsody, Another One Bites The Dust and, of course, We Will Rock You.

The original West End production opened at the Dominion Theatre in London on May 14, 2002 and is currently the 15th longest-running musical in West End history.

The Abbotsford show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.ca.
