An Abbotsford-based musical theatre program presents its production of Disney's Newsies from May 21 to 24 in Chilliwack.
The production by Ignite Theatre, now in its 12th season, takes place at the Hub International Theatre at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
The show is inspired by the real-life newsboys' strike of 1899 in New York City.
Executive producer Allana Lemke said this year’s performance is a reflection of the dedication of the creative team in bringing the true-to-life story to the stage.
“We are honoured to be a part of the thriving arts community in Chilliwack with our immersive performing arts program, and we can’t wait to captivate audiences with our high-calibre performances this May," she said.
Ignite is the performing arts department of Heritage Christian Online School, a provincial online learning school.
The group practises each week in Abbotsford and performs every May at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.
There are currently 44 students in the group from Grades 5 to 12, and most are from Abbotsford and Chilliwack, with a few from Mission, Langley and White Rock.
Past performances include Annie JR (2014), Disney’s My Son Pinocchio JR (2015), Seussical JR (2016), Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (2017 and 2023), Cinderella (2018), Peter Pan (2019), Disney’s Newsies (2020/21), Mary Poppins (2022) and Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka (2024).
Showtime for Newsies is 7 p.m. each night, with a 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday, May 24.
Tickets are $27 for adults and $22 for students/seniors. They are available at ignitetheatre.ca and at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre box office.
