"Safety first" might just be the guiding principle for local legend Roy Morice, who celebrated his 102nd birthday on Sept 22.

An industrial safety officer for most of his working life, Roy is also well known in the Fraser Valley for his musical talents, amongst other civic contributions.

Born in Biggar, Sask., Roy left the farm as a young man to work in Prince Albert for an electrical company. He then moved to Calgary, Alta. and began his long career in industrial safety.

Transferring to the Workers Compensation Board (now known as WorkSafeBC) in Vancouver in 1969, Roy resided in Abbotsford and worked in the Fraser Valley until his retirement.

Roy’s long list of accomplishments include being a 25-year serving brother and past chairman of the Abbotsford St. John’s Ambulance.

He has been recognized for his accident prevention programs involving community speed watch and improving local traffic safety issues, as well as his dedication to safety for children in the school district.

His talent for singing and music is also well known in Abbotsford. Roy played a number of times for notable Canadian musicians such as Gordy Tapp and Mart Kenney.

Roy was recognized in 1990 for being a BC Tourism Recreation and Cultural Super Host for the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. He provided free entertainment for many of the senior homes and other care homes throughout Abbotsford.

A recipient of the Abbotsford Rotary Club Service award, Roy has also been honoured by the local Kiwanis Club for his longtime support.

Roy was presented in 2012 with the Order of Abbotsford by MP Ed Fast for his outstanding and selfless service to the community.
