A project taking place this week at Eugene Reimer Middle School is bringing awareness to the importance of standing up in the face of adversity.

The Voices of Courage Community Project includes personal experiences from community members with a special focus on indigenous perspectives.

The project began today (Wednesday) and continues Thursday. It involves students, parents and community members recording a two- to three-minute personal experience of courage.

They are also working on creating three wood-panel mosaic designs replicating a tree and a large rock that are in front of the school.

Their designs include messages of courage laid over the rock.

When finished, the three panels will be displayed in the school’s foyer.

“Both community members and our students will be able to appreciate, empathize and acknowledge the courageous acts being shared as a part of the colorful fabric of the City of Abbotsford,” said Nerlap Sidhu, the school’s student achievement department head, of the project.

Also invited to join the project were students, staff and parents from Bradner and McMillan elementaries; Home Depot staff; Abbotsford firefighters and police officers; aboriginal citizens; and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
