The United Way Fraser Valley announced last Tuesday (April 18) that a total of $169,000 has been provided to several local projects that address poverty reduction, affordable housing and homelessness, and the success of children six years old and under.
The priority grants were announced for projects in Aldergrove, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and the Fraser Cascade.
Receiving $15,000 in funding this year is the Fraser Valley Rental Assistance Project, managed by the Mennonite Central Committee.
This program provides one-time emergency loans for families and individuals who are at risk of losing their homes.
Other Abbotsford programs receiving funds included the Autumn House with Abbotsford Community Services and the Youth and Family Workers Program at Cyrus Centre.
In total, Abbotsford received $42,000 in grants.
Of the $169,000, approximately $59,000 went towards poverty reduction, $40,140 to children ages newborn to six, and over $69,800 to programs focused on affordable housing.
Each organization and program funded goes through a rigorous approval process by a volunteer impact committee to make sure the dollars are invested to areas of need and feasibility.
