The business of culture: UFV prof looks at advantages of business diversity

Abbotsford is one of Canada’s most diverse cities, with immigrants making up more than 25 per cent of its population.

Abbotsford is one of Canada’s most diverse cities, with immigrants making up more than 25 per cent of its population, the majority coming from South Asia.

As a result, doing business in Abbotsford comes with its own different opportunities and challenges.

Satwinder Bains, director of the UFV Centre for Indo Canadian Studies, will be discussing the advantages of doing business with different cultures at the Abbotsford Chamber’s Feb. 29 luncheon.

Bains has been a long-time advocate for cross-cultural education and is active in both diversity education and community development.

Guests will hear that reaching out to diverse cultures takes more than simply printing brochures in different languages or hiring bilingual clerks. Business practices need to be adjusted to meet the demands of different cultures.

The event takes place at the Abbotsford Banquet & Conference Centre (33738 Laurel Street).  Networking begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by lunch at noon.

Pre-registration is required and tickets can be purchased for $29 for members and their guests and $39 for non-members.  Register online at www.abbotsfordchamber.com or by calling the Chamber office at 604-859-9651.
