The Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts: North Poplar Campus held its inaugural Poplar Piano Showcase. Students from Grades 1 through 4 performed for friends and family members in recitals featuring dessert and coffee last week.
ASIA North Poplar opened its piano lab in September 2014 and all students from Grades 1 through 5 had the opportunity to take weekly lessons.
In February, students were able to take further piano instruction on a first-come, first-served basis. These students were featured in the Poplar Piano Showcase.
Kyle Featherstone is the designer and instructor of the piano program at ASIA North Poplar, believed to be the only elementary school featuring a piano lab and piano instruction in the Lower Mainland, if not the province.
The lab plus 15 pianos were made possible through a grant from School District 34.
The Poplar Gala held by ASIA North Poplar in February 2015 raised enough money for two more pianos, which will offer more students the opportunity to take lessons.
The school will be offering after-school piano instruction to the public in the fall of 2015.
