Staff at Scotiabank branches in the Fraser Valley raised almost $17,000 for United Way of the Fraser Valley (UWFV).

A cheque was presented to UWFV on Thursday in Abbotsford at the Gladwin Road branch.

About $14,500 of the funds was raised through employee payroll deductions, and the rest was a corporate gift.

The donation was from branches in Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack.

Lori Masse, United Way director of resource development, said an example of how such funds could be used is the outreach worker for the Warm Zone, a facility for street-entrenched and vulnerable women.

The United Way provided a $15,000 grant last year to help pay someone to assist these women find housing and help them maintain it.
