Registration now open for Environmental Mind Grind competition

Event open to high school students in Abbotsford and Mission

A team from Rick Hansen Secondary won the 2016 Enviromental Mind Grind Competition held in April.

High school students have until Dec. 16 to register their teams for the fourth annual Environmental Mind Grind 2017 competition.

The contest, hosted by the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Program, is an academic trivia-based competition where student teams answer questions focused on climate change, energy, forests, transportation and air quality, waste, water and species, and spaces.

Students prepare for the competition by reviewing the material in the contest study guide.

The guide is available online at acsrecycling.ca.

The contest takes place Feb. 25 and monetary prizes are awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams. All participants receive a contest T-shirt and gift bag filled with eco-friendly items.

This year’s contest was held in April. First place of $1,500 went to Rick Hansen Secondary, while second place ($500) went to Mission Secondary.

The third-place team, W. J. Mouat Secondary, won $250.

The prize money went toward environmental initiatives at their schools.
