Prize money is up and that means more competition and top-notch quality animal stock at the open shows and 4-H competitions at Abbotsford Agrifair this year.

“Our big attraction this year is our ‘All-Breed Open Beef Pen Show’,” said Naylene Beirnes, agriculture co-ordinator.

“It is for pure bred and commercial breeds. Contestants can bring in a cow which will be judged in a pen. The key thing is that the prize money has jumped up huge!”

“The Grand Champion bull and the Grand Champion female prize is $500 each," said Beirnes. “The majority of classes have upped the prize money. First place wins $100, second is $75 and third prize is $50 per class.”

For more information on the show and how to enter find the prize book online at www.agrifair.ca.

Agriland, an interactive area where kids can be up close and personal with animals they wouldn’t get to see every day, is expanding this year.

Agrifair will be awarding one hard-working 4-H Club member, a scholarship grand prize of $500. To be eligible contestants must be at least 17 years old. The winner will be announced during the 4-H Closing Ceremonies.

Other 4-H competitions include 4-H Dairy, 4-H Beef, 4-H Horse, 4-H Goat and 4-H Dog categories as well as 4-H Sewing, Crafts and Photography and 4-H Educational Displays. The 4-H Dairy and 4-H Beef shows will be a split-show this year, two days each. As in previous years; Junior, Intermediate and Senior Grand Champion of the 4-H Dairy and 4-H Beef shows will receive belt buckles.

The Country Horse Classic will be running all four days of the fair.

The popular Six Horse Hitch Competition demonstrates how three pairs of horses work together as one fluid team to pull a wagon. Each pair has a different job from setting the pace and rounding corners to steering the wagon. The teams will be judged on the horses, harness, wagon, driver and overall performance and eye-appeal.

The Draft Horse Pull Competition will give you a whole new appreciation for the term “horse power”. Witness the extraordinary strength of the tall and extremely muscular heavy draft horse teams as they compete against each other to pull the most weight over a short distance.

In addition, some new acts may be added to the show (yet to be announced).
