VYPER announced a free powwow event in Abbotsford for March 26.

An Abbotsford group wants to teach people about everything there is to learn about powwows, including how to dance at one, with a one-day event on Wednesday (March 26).

Hosted in a combined effort by the Visionary Youth Peers for Equity and Revitalization (VYPER) team and the 7 Ways Indigenous Association, and funded by the University of the Fraser Valley, this pop-up event will make Indigenous culture more interactive than ever before.

The evening begins with some powwow style and stories at 4 p.m., which will be followed by a community dinner of pork carnitas with rice and beans from 5 to 6 p.m.

During this part of the evening, there will also be kids' games available to entertain the little ones.

Once everyone has been fed, the entertainment really kicks off, with various types of powwow dancers putting their skills on display for the crowd, using the basic footwork taught to attendees earlier in the evening.

The performances will continue from 6 to 8 p.m., which will be the end of the event. Leading the festivities will be MCs Isaac Lindsay and Marcella Sunshine, and drummer Bad Eagle Singers.

The event is free for all ages, with everything taking place at 3277 Gladwin Rd., Abbotsford, on Wednesday, March 26.

This pop-up event is coming on the heels of the VYPER team winning themselves a Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Award for their continued efforts to preserve and promote Indigenous culture in Abbotsford and the rest of the Fraser Valley.
