Miss Teenage Southern B.C. Alexis Gardner and Abbotsford's Shear Performance Barbershop have come together to put on a local fundraising event.

Gardner, as a title holder, said she, like other contestants, is required to raise funds for a charity selected by the pageant, in this case, the international charity organization Free the Children (FTC).

"It's a wonderful charity that has helped children in over 40 developing countries," said Gardner, and all proceeds will end up with the FTC organization.

Gardner said she approached owner of Shear Performance, Marisa Oborne - a past employer of Gardner - with the idea of putting on an outdoor event for the kids, which will include a hair cut-a-thon, ice cream, pop, a balloon station, photo booth and more.

Oborne said she was more than happy to help, advising the hair cutting will be left to staff from Shear Performance as well as students from Abbotsford Senior Secondary and Utopia Academy. Men and children can participate with a minimum donation of $5.

Gardner said the fundraising goal isn't extreme, just $400 in donations can help pay for a school, meal plan, supplies or other necessities.

Some of the sponsors include Save-on-Foods, Dairy Queen, Tracycakes, Perfect Tan and Little Monsters Studio.

The event will be held in the parking lot outside Shear Barbershop at 2526 Yale Ct #102 on Jun. 20, from 2-5 p.m.
