A new documentary mini-series is focusing on the creative talent hidden away in the Fraser Valley.

FourxFour is a passion-project by Alain Munga hoping to capture unorthodox forms of art away from Vancouver, which he says draws the spotlight away from other areas in the Lower Mainland.

“I’ve always been fascinated by stories,” Munga said. “When you think about creativity or creative people, you think of the city. You don’t really think of what’s going on in the Valley.”

In his opening project, Munga features Gibson Robinson, a young barber in Abbotsford. Robinson’s skill as a hairstylist started by chance one day in high school when a friend badly needed a haircut. As he took up a set of clippers that day, he started a journey which has led to a successful four-year business endeavour with his friends at Raww Cuts.

“The more I talked to him and learned about what he was doing I just thought he’d be a good fit, because a lot of people don’t think that it’s actually a craft,” Munga said.

Robinson was thankful somebody took notice of his work.

“Other people just see it as a job but I think there is a little more to it,” he said. “Everyone can be different with it. It’s not the kind of thing where it’s just cut and paste. You kind of have your own spice to it.”

Munga hopes that, by putting his lens on creative types, he’s creating a win-win for both parties. His subjects can have their work highlighted and he can grow his portfolio and add more resources to his three-man studio.
