Abbotsford chocolatiers Wim and Veve Tas hold an event on Saturday, March 24 in support of Matthew’s House.

The couple, who have operated ChocolaTas for the last 16 years, hold a family Easter barbecue on their premises at 31060 Peardonville Rd. from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Along with hotdogs and buns sponsored by Lepp Farm Market, there will be chocolate treats for the kids, an opportunity to take pictures with the Easter Bunny, and a gift with a purchase in the chocolate shop.

Children will also have a chance to plant a “seed of hope” to take home with them as a reminder of the day.

All proceeds from the barbecue will benefit Matthew’s House, which provides quality care to children with complex care needs so that parents can get the rest they deserve.

“We are looking forward to an amazing event and hope we can make it a tradition, creating beautiful memories for everyone that attends,” Veve said.

In 2002, Wim and Veve were producing, selling and managing their business all from their home but they have since expanded to a production facility and storefront in Abbotsford as well as a space at the Granville Island Market in Vancouver.

Family has always been important to the couple. That’s why, when they decided to support a charity in their community, they chose Matthew’s House.

For Veve, helping parents who live with extra challenges comes from her own experience.

“As a young teenager, I helped out at summer camps for children with special needs, and saw the tremendous effort that it takes to provide daily care. I was always exhausted after week three!” she says.

“So my heart goes out to the families – they need support. You cannot do this on your own.”

The Tases also have two healthy children and that is something that they have never taken for granted.

As a couple, they knew that if family was important to them, it needed to be reflected in their business. Making excellent, quality chocolate that is unique, beautiful and delicious is important but the real joy comes from knowing that it is part of the celebrations of family life.

“We’re part of wedding proposals and weddings. We are on the table when families come together. We share their laughter and joy,” Veve says.

“This gives us joy in our daily work and the appreciation we receive from our customers is wonderful.”

ChocolaTas has supported Matthew’s House in various creative ways over the years.
