CICS event focuses on men's role in partner violence

Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies to hold presentation on South Asian male perpetrators of violence

The Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies (CICS) is holding a presentation on South Asian male perpetrators of intimate partner violence on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.

It will take place at the centre, on the University of the Fraser Valley's (UFV) Abbotsford campus.

The event, entitled "This is a Man's Problem," will feature a discussion by Gary Thandi, who holds a masters of social work.

Thandi will be presenting his research, which presents the perspective of 17 front-line practitioners who have years of direct experience working with South Asian male perpetrators of intimate partner violence or their families.

All the research participants - psychologists, program managers and counsellors, police and probation officers - are members of South Asian communities in the Lower Mainland.

They emphasize that men are responsible for the violence they perpetrate, and their choice to perpetrate violence has resulted in significant physical, emotional and psychological harm not only to their wives but also to their children, their extended family and their communities.

The research participants make it clear that second generation South Asian men born in Canada – while different from their fathers – are often raised with many of the same cultural patterns of behavior and belief.

RSVP's are required for the event. For more information call Sharanjit Sandhra at 604-851-6325 or email sharanjit.sandhra@ufv.ca.
