City Dream Centre holds its annual Back to School event and backpack giveaway in Abbotsford for the first time on Saturday, Aug. 24.

City Dream Centre hosts its fifth annual Back to School event on Saturday, Aug. 24 and this year has added an Abbotsford school.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Abbotsford Middle School (33231 Bevan Ave.), joining Kwantlen Park Secondary in Surrey and Douglas Park Community Elementary in Langley.

In attendance at the Abbotsford event will be several school trustees, Mayor Henry Braun and Coun. Kelly Chahal.

Free backpacks with school supplies will be distributed and a barbecue lunch will be served.

There will also be free kids’ haircuts, free manicures for moms, food and produce hampers for families to take home, and a kids’ play area with a bouncy slide and face painting.

Since 2009, City Dream Centre’s Adopt-a-School program has worked closely with teachers, school administrators and the Surrey school board, providing help to families in need throughout the school year.

Hundreds of food hampers and more than 3,000 wrapped Christmas gifts are given out each year.

Girls Club and Boys Club noon-hour programs run weekly, helping to equip at-risk girls and boys against gangs and traffickers and notably changing the bully culture in participating schools.

Weekly emergency weekend feeding support is also provided to relieve the strain of families struggling with poverty.

President and founder Loretta Hibbs said she is excited to be adding Abbotsford to the back-to-school event this year.

“It’s such an honour to serve these families in Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford who are facing so many challenges,” she said.
