Abbotsford trade show reveals futuristic agricultural tech

Pacific Agricultural Show runs from Jan. 23 to 25 at Tradex

The Pacific Agriculture Show is returning for another year of farming fun, with thousands of people expected to stop by to experience the rich diversity of B.C.'s agricultural sector.

Every year, Tradex plays host to this event, which features a lineup of more than 300 exhibitors from a variety of agricultural backgrounds.

Among those participating in the upcoming show are many groups at the forefront of the sector's technological advances, explained organizer Jim Shepard.

"As machinery and equipment become more advanced, so too does our lineup of exhibitors," Shepard said. "This year, for instance, we’re showcasing innovations like AI-equipped tractors and drones – technologies designed to help farmers operate more efficiently and productively."

Being able to showcase these new and innovative forms of tech is something that has been a particular focus of the Pacific Agriculture Show from the very start.

"Abbotsford has established itself as a tech hub for agriculture, and the show complements that reputation. In addition to exhibits, we’ve curated a strong lineup of conference programs, including sessions on horticulture, dairy, and agricultural leadership, hosted by FCC. These programs deliver valuable insights into the latest trends and advancements, ensuring attendees walk away with actionable knowledge to enhance their operations."

While the long list of exhibitors is a major draw for most attendees, Shepard said that the Pacific Agriculture Show is so much more than just a trade show.

"It’s also a community event," he said. "We want visitors to learn what it takes to grow and harvest the food we rely on every day. That’s why we’ve included family-friendly features like an antique tractor display and a petting zoo in the MNP Pavilion."

Other attractions include face painting, a balloon artist, ice cream, and much more.

Being able to bring this event back for another year is important for everyone in the community, whether they're directly involved in the agricultural industry or not, explained Shepard.

"The COVID-19 pandemic underscored just how valuable face-to-face interactions at trade shows and conferences like the Pacific Agriculture Show truly are. The absence of in-person gatherings highlighted the importance of connection within the farming and agricultural industries. As a result, there’s a renewed appreciation for events like ours and the opportunities they provide."

The Pacific Agriculture Show runs from Jan. 23 to 25 at Tradex (1190 Cornell St.), with doors open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

People of all ages are welcome, with kids aged 14 or younger able to attend for free. Tickets for seniors and 4-H members are $10, while everyone else can get in for $15 each.

"Whether you’re directly involved in agriculture or just curious about the industry, there’s so much to see and explore at the Pacific Agriculture Show," Shepard said. "It’s a chance to experience firsthand how agriculture has grown into a high-tech, innovative, and essential sector."
