LINE DANCE CLASSES
Loretta’s Line Dance classes began this week at Trinity Memorial United Church (33737 George Ferguson Way) in Abbotsford. Beginners’ classes are every Wednesday and Friday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Classes for experienced dancers are the same days, but from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. To register or for more details, call Loretta Riggins at 604-859-4048.
DANCES EVERY FRIDAY
Abbotsford Social Activity Association holds dances every Friday at the hall at 33889 Essendene Ave. from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Cost is $6 for members and $7 for non-members. Bands for January are: Midnight Eagles (Jan. 11), Sweetwater (Jan. 18) and Johnny Hsu (Jan. 25).
Valhalla Pure Outfitters in Abbotsford offers an avalanche awareness course from Jan. 11 to 13 and Feb. 22 to 24. The course, led by Roger Friesen, provides basic avalanche awareness for any back-country traveller, whether snowshoeing, skiing or sledding. One evening is spent in the classroom learning some basics followed by two days on the snow practising and developing snow travel skills. For more information or to register, call 604-850-5523.

Registration is on Monday, Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. to noon for the next set of computer classes offered by the Abbotsford Social Activity Association (33889 Essendene Ave.) Classes start Jan. 15, and run Tuesdays and Thursdays for three weeks. Beginners meet at noon and intermediates are at 2 p.m. Cost is $60.
TEA AND TALK
A tea and talk for South Asian grandparents takes place Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Eugene Reimer community hub room, 3433 Firhill Drive. TECH CAFE AT LIBRARY
Mission Library (33247 Second Ave.) holds a Tech Cafe on Thursday, Jan. 17 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Bring your new gadget (such as a cellphone, camera, or hand-held GPS) and let technically gifted teens explain how they work and what they do. Registration is required. Info: 604-826-6610
UKRAINIAN NEW YEAR
The Ukrainian Club of Abbotsford holds its annual Malanka (Ukrainian New Year) celebration on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Sts. Joachim and Ann’s Church hall, 2827 273 St. in Aldergrove. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., and dinner is served at 6:30. Tickets are $50 general, $15 for kids ages seven to 12, and free for kids six and under. Volunteers are needed for the Reading Buddies program at Clearbrook Library and the new Abbotsford Library. The program pairs high school students or adult volunteers with children in Grades 1 to 4 who need extra help with their reading skills. The volunteers spend an hour a week practising reading and playing literacy-based games with their little buddies. Students earn volunteer hours towards graduation requirements. An orientation session is provided to all volunteers before being assigned a reading buddy. Application forms are available at the children’s desk at Clearbrook Library (32320 George Ferguson Way).
MY DADDY AND ME
