Abbotsford high school collects the most drink containers in B.C.
Yale secondary is being lauded for its environmental leadership.
Yale returned 235,000 beverage containers – the most in B.C. – earned $15,000 in deposit refunds, and won $1,000 in prize money, surpassing every school in the province during Encorp Pacific’s 2011-2012 BC School Recycling Program.
Yale topped their result from last year of 225,000 containers.
“Yale secondary has won the 1,001 or more students high school enrolment category for five years running. This is a school that shows tremendous environmental leadership,” said Sandy Sigmund, vice-president of Encorp.
Since the inception of the Encorp BC School Recycling Program in 2000, more than 40 million containers have been recycled, and B.C. schools have been refunded more than $2.4 million.
The schools are grouped into categories, based on student enrolment, and the schools that collect the most containers in each category win cash prizes of $1,000, $750 and $500 for first, second and third.
This year’s Abbotsford school highlights include:
- Dogwood School collecting 31,000 containers and coming first in their enrolment category of 1-199 students. They earned $2,100 in deposit refunds and $1,000 in prize money for $3,100.
- An honourable mention (fifth place) in the 751 to 1000 student category goes to Robert Bateman Secondary for recovering 32,000 containers and earning $2,100 in deposit refunds.
