The Ruthless Readers from Mathxwí Elementary School placed second at the grand challenge level of the Reading Link Challenge competition.
The competition was held in North Vancouver on May 1 with teams from the Fraser Valley, Coquitlam, Vancouver, New Westminster and Surrey library systems going head-to-head to determine an overall winner.
Owen Sekhon, Jay Sekhon, Nixon Fyfe, Pavel Baring and Stephanie Anderson made up the Ruthless Readers.
The Reading Link Challenge is a partnership between public library systems and schools to promote reading. Librarians work with teachers to determine a group of students in Grade 4 or 5 to answer trivia style questions about six books. The books are chosen by a panel of library staff.
The Ruthless Readers advanced from their school competition, beat other local schools in the library challenge, won against Fraser Valley Regional Library teams in the community challenge, and ultimately came second in the last stage – the grand challenge.
The team will be honoured with a plaque to recognize their accomplishment in an assembly at Mathxwí.
Rabbit Magic from Surrey received first and the Evermore Readers from Langley came behind Abbotsford in third place.
